Zilker Belts | Vagabond
March 7, 2024
Concept
Named after one of Jonathan Terrell’s, biggest hits, ‘Vagabond’ was produced to serve as a calling card for one of Zilker Belts’ most popular products as well as their mission to support the music community. Intentionally designed to highlight both song and artist, we knew it was crucial to peel back the curtain of who our subject was and why he committed to the life he chose. Director Harrison Chiu spent a lot of time in pre-production researching our subject, figuring out how to visually show Jonathan’s life story through sight and sound. Weaving in powerful vocals and thoughtful reflection, JT’s story is as raw as it gets.
Director of Photography Adam Eurich’s visual design set an organic tone, using natural sunlight to create a warm contrast, illuminating JT as a figure who is honest, humble, and grateful. The locations for the shoot, secured by our production team, were places in nearby Lockhart, TX, chosen for their flexibility and a tribute to where JT now calls home.
All these elements come together to create the perfect environment that embodies the essence of Jonathan “The Vagabond” Terrell.
Tone & Feel
When planning this spot, our Director and DP wanted the viewer to feel the scars and optimism that JT carries with him daily. Although we shot the project a few different ways, our team embraced JT taking us on a journey, giving a sense of camaraderie among the audience and the crew.
We used the beautiful Sony Burano with vintage spherical lenses, allowing for heroic angles to capture Terrell. Additionally, unique lens filters were used, creating a light haze that adds a touch of softness to the world.
Production
The shoot itself was completed within a single day, which presented time limitations as a challenge. Working with musicians like JT typically comes with tight schedules, but our AD coordinated with the crew and the client to ensure a smooth and punctual production flow.
Harrison collaborated closely with JT to capture the perfect on-camera delivery of his lines, investing time in capturing Terrell’s love for music, the unique crossroads he’s faced, and ultimately his unwavering belief in himself as an artist.
The crew also had the incredible opportunity to witness JT singing, a truly amazing experience to see our subject in form. The final spot evokes a similar feeling.
This doc was released in conjunction with Zilker Belts’ “Vagabond” campaign launch. Filming this spot was an absolute blast, and the Salado Team extends their gratitude to everyone involved for coming together to create such an exciting and inspiring spot.
